Commonwealth Ministerial Debt Sustainability Forum

Background

CMDSF April 2009

“The Commonwealth Ministerial Debt Sustainability Forum (CMDSF), previously Commonwealth HIPC Ministerial Forum (CHMF) prior to 2008, was established to:

  • provide a regular input into the shaping of the HIPC Initiative:
  • provide support to countries going through the process; and
  • to provide support for their collective advocacy and information exchange.

Since 2002, Ministers from Commonwealth HIPCs have been meeting twice a year to critically review the workings of the HIPC Initiative and ensure that their recommendations are conveyed to the key international meetings, most notably the International Monetary and Finance Committee (IMFC) and the Development Committee (DC) meetings of the IMF and the World Bank. All eligible Commonwealth countries have completed the international debt relief process but there remain a large number of debt and debt related issues with which the forum remains engaged. The objective of ensuring debt sustainability and achieving the MDGs guide discussion on these issues.”

Last Meeting

The last meeting was held in the wings of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting (CFMM) in Cyprus on 30th September 2009.
