Voting over

Voting is over in Mozambique's fourth national multi-party elections

Voting is over in Mozambique’s fourth national multi-party elections. Unlike the December 2004 election, when it rained in parts of the country, yesterday was warm and dry. Most of the polls closed by 6.00pm on what was a national holiday across Mozambique. The early morning queues dissipated by mid-afternoon in many places, according to media reports, which also claimed that voter turnout was higher this year. The general mood was ordered and calm, they noted, with a few incidences in which police were called to intervene.

Counting started soon after the polls closed and went on well into the night, in some areas, by candlelight. Partial results were trickling through by this morning. For the first time, Presidential, Parliamentary and Provincial elections were held on the same day and it will be a while before the official results are announced.
