Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth Secretary-General opens the 34th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in Geneva
Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth Secretary-General has opened the 34th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in Geneva which focuses today on the health-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Commonwealth is a microcosm of a changing world and can play a major beneficial role, he said – through offering innovation and ideas, advocacy and consensus-building and practical assistance.
And we can all contribute and learn from each other.
The Secretary-General said of the Commonwealth: “Across five continents and 54 countries, we may be home to one third of the world’s population – yet we are home to two thirds of its AIDS sufferers, its maternal deaths, its children under five years old suffering from malnutrition, and nearly half of its infant deaths.”
The battle continues, he said. “The MDG targets themselves may not move, but the earth moves underneath them.”
