Commonwealth Secretary-General laments the passing of Tuvalu Prime Minister Hon Ionatana Ionatana

The Commonwealth Secretary-General Mr Don McKinnon today expressed his deep condolences to the Government of Tuvalu on the sudden passing away of Prime Minister Ionatana Ionatana on Friday 8 December.

In expressing his sympathy to Acting Prime Minister Langitupu Tuilumu Mr McKinnon said that Prime Minister Ionatana's presence would be sadly missed in the region and in the Commonwealth family.

"I join with the people of Tuvalu and of the region in mourning the loss of a committed statesman and leading Pacific figure, and a member of the Commonwealth family. His presence will be missed."

The Tuvalu Government has suspended parliament until further notice and declared a state of mourning until the State Funeral on Tuesday 12 December.
