The Commonwealth congratulates President-elect of Ghana

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Don McKinnon, today sent a letter of congratulations to the President-elect of Ghana, Mr John A Kufuor. In his message Mr McKinnon described Mr Kufuor's election as "one more victory for the ideals of democracy," adding "I look forward to working closely with you to achieve the Commonwealth's objective of promoting international co-operation and improving the living standards of our people."

The Secretary-General paid tribute to outgoing President Flt-Lt (Rtd) Jerry John Rawlings for the socio-economic and political development of Ghana through difficult times. He also commended Ghana's Independent Electoral Commission, for organising successful elections.
