Commonwealth Education Ministers today agreed measures to address the international recruitment of teachers in member countries.
The Commonwealth Teacher Recruitment Protocol was adopted at a ministerial meeting at Stoke Rochford, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom.
The Protocol addresses the rights and responsibilities of source countries, recruiting countries and recruited teachers. It was developed at the request of the 15th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers held in Edinburgh, UK, in October 2003.
The Ministerial Meeting on the Commonwealth Teacher Recruitment Protocol was chaired by Nigeria's Minister of Education, the Hon Professor Fabian Osuji, and attended by Education Ministers and senior officials from 26 countries and territories. Also attending were representatives of civil society organisations. The meeting was organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat with support from the UK's National Union of Teachers.
