1 September 2004
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will address members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) at their 50th Conference in Quebec City, Canada later this week.
The Conference, which runs from 1 to 9 September 2004 in Quebec City and Toronto, will bring together members of parliament from across the Commonwealth and will focus on the theme "Responsibilities and Rights of People and Parliaments in a Global Community".
In his keynote address, on 4 September, Mr McKinnon will discuss the role Commonwealth Parliamentarians can play in promoting democracy and development.
Speaking today the Secretary-General said, "In today's globalised world, many decisions are taken far away from the people. Parliamentarians have a crucial role to play in building bridges between the people and centres of power. The Commonwealth Secretariat and the CPA have a long track record of strong collaboration and I'm sure that this event will help strengthen the role parliamentarians can play in delivering better prospects and greater opportunities to all Commonwealth people."
During his stay in Quebec City, Mr McKinnon will also meet with the Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson.
Note to Editors:
The CPA has Association Branches in more than 165 national, state, provincial and territorial Parliaments, with a total membership of over 15,000 Parliamentarians.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General will be in Quebec City from 2-5 September 2004.
