Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon announced today that following consultations with Ministers, the next meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will take place in Londonon 21-22 May 2004. This will be the first meeting of CMAG after its reconstitution by Commonwealth leaders in Abuja, Nigeria, in December 2003. CMAG currently includes the Foreign Ministers of The Bahamas, Canada, India, Lesotho, Malta, Nigeria, Samoa, Sri Lankaand United Republic of Tanzania.
CMAG will consider the situation in Pakistan, which is currently suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth. The Group will also consider developments in Fiji Islands, which remains on CMAG's agenda since the lifting in 2002 of its suspension from the councils of the Commonwealth.

CMAG was established by Commonwealth leaders to deal with serious or persistent violations of the Harare Declaration, which lays down the Commonwealth's fundamental political values. This will be the 23rd meeting of CMAG since its establishment in 1995. The 22nd meeting was held in New Yorkin September last year. CMAG was reconstituted by Commonwealth Heads of Government at their meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, in December 2003. CMAG usually meets a twice a year to consider developments in the countries on its agenda.
