Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will next week pay official visits to The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Ghana where he will follow up on mandates from the last Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Abuja, Nigeria in December 2003, as well as preparations for the next CHOGM due to take place in Malta in 2005.The Secretary-General will be in The Gambia from 3 to 5 May, where he will meet with the President, HE Alhaji Yahya Jammeh and the Foreign Minister, Mr Baboucar Blaise Jagne.
In Sierra Leone, where he will be from 5 to 7 May, Mr McKinnon will hold consultations with the President, HE Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, the Vice President, Hon Solomon Berewa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Mr Momodu Koroma, and other senior Ministers. He will also meet with members of the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
On 8 May, the Secretary-General will travel to Ghana, where he will meet with the President, HE Mr John A Kufuor and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon Nana Akuffo-Addo. He will also attend the "Adaekese" Festival, celebrating the 5th anniversary of the King of Ashanti's accession to the Golden Stool in Kumasi on 9 May, following an invitation from the King, H R H Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Mr McKinnon's discussions will also focus on Commonwealth programmes of co-operation and technical assistance and issues relating to international trade, economic development and the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).
