Commonwealth Secretary-General to attend celebrations in South Africa

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will attend the Inauguration of President Thabo Mbeki in Pretoria, South Africa, on Tuesday, 27 April 2004.

The Secretary-Generalwill also attend celebrations to mark the Tenth Anniversary of Freedom, which will be held in Pretoria following the Inauguration Ceremony.

On the eve of his departure for South Africa, the Secretary-General said:

"The Commonwealth congratulates President Thabo Mbeki and his party for their emphatic victory in the recent elections and joins the people of South Africain celebrating ten years of freedom and democracy. The transition from apartheid to a multi-racial democracy was a seminal historical event from which the whole world can draw inspiration. The Commonwealth pays tribute to the people of South Africa in their struggle for freedom and recalls with pride the support it gave in helping to bring their aspirations to fruition."
