7th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting (7WAMM) - Note on Media Accreditation

Note on Media Accreditation 

Fiji Islands will host the 7th Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting (7WAMM) from 30 May to 2 June 2004 at the Sheraton Fiji Resort in Nadi.

'Partnerships for Gender Equality' is the theme of the meeting this year. Ministers in plenaries and thematic discussion groups will examine critical challenges and emerging issues facing Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers (31 May - 2 June). These include:

·      Gender, Democracy, Peace and Conflict

·      Gender, Human Rights and Law

·      Gender, Poverty and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

·      Gender and Trade

·      Gender and HIV/AIDS

·      The Role of Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality

 

The official opening of 7WAMM by the Prime Minister of Fiji Islands, Laisenia Qarase, will be held on the morning of Monday 31 May.

 

Journalists who wish to cover 7WAMM should complete the attached accreditation form (page 4) and return it to the Communications and Public Affairs Division, Commonwealth Secretariat by Friday, 14 May 2004.

Accreditation

Bona fide media representatives wishing to cover the 7th Commonwealth Women's Affairs Ministers Meeting (7WAMM) must be accredited in order to have access to the facilities.

Accreditation will be handled by the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. Applications for accreditation must be made on the attached form or on photocopies made from it. One passport-sized photograph must be included with the application.

Your application must be accompanied by a hardcopy letter on an original company letterhead indicating your role, signed by a News or Features Editor or equivalent senior editor, confirming the applicant has been assigned to cover 7WAMM.

Airport Arrivals and Entry

Media representatives entering Fiji Islands should be in possession of a valid passport. Nationals of the following countries do not require a visa:

Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Botswana, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominica, Estonia, The Federal Republic of Germany, The Federated States of Micronesia, Finland, France, The Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Grenada, Guyana, Holy See (Vatican), Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Kiribati, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lesotho, Luxemburg, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Nauru, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, The Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Romania, Russia, Samoa, Slovak Republic, St Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Tonga, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Turkey, Tuvalu, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Venezuela, The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

For holders of other passports, a visa is required for entry. Application should be made at the nearest Fiji Islands High Commission, allowing necessary time for processing. The minimum time required is at least seven working days before the departure date.

The airport tax is F$20 (US$12).

Medical Facilities

Medical facilities will be available to the media for the duration of 7WAMM. Media personnel should make appropriate arrangements for insurance to cover emergency medical, surgical or hospital expenses.

Customs

Media representatives bringing equipment into Fiji Islands should produce a detailed inventory including model and serial numbers of all equipment. The Customs Officer-in-Charge will endorse the inventory on arrival and departure. This requirement does not apply to personal items such as laptops or similar equipment. For further details, please contact the Fiji High Commission in your country.

Currency Regulations

The currency is the Fiji dollar. Currency transactions can be completed at any branch of the commercial banks in the Fiji Islands. Opening hours of commercial banks are generally from 0930-1600 hrs Monday to Friday. Automated teller machines (ATMs) are available throughout the city. All major credit cards are accepted by most outlets.

Power Supply

The power supply in the Fiji Islands is 240 volts AC, using the 3-pin power outlets standard in Australia and New Zealand.
