Commonwealth Expert Team Report says Mozambique Local Elections ‘credible’

Commonwealth Secretary-GeneralDon McKinnon welcomed the report of the independent Expert Team sent to observe the local elections in Mozambique, which were held on 19 November 2003. 

The Secretary-Generalsaid: "In their report, which is being released today, the Experts say that 'the elections credibly reflected the will of the Mozambican people'.  I congratulate the people of Mozambiqueand look forward to continued progress between now and the Presidential and Parliamentary elections later this year." 

The members of the Expert Team were:

The Team was asked by the Commonwealth Secretary-General to observe preparations for the elections, the polling, counting and results process and the overall electoral environment.

The decision to send the Commonwealth Expert Team followed an invitation from the President of Mozambique during discussions with the Secretary-General in early 2003.

The members of the Expert Team began work on 12 November and remained in Mozambique until 24 November 2003. The Secretary-Generalhas sent the report to the President of Mozambique, the President of the Comissão Nacional de Eleições (National Electoral Commission - CNE), the country's main political parties and Commonwealth Governments.
