Commonwealth ministers to meet in New York in the wings of the 58th UN General Assembly

22 September 2003

Five Commonwealth Ministerial Meetings are scheduled to be held in New York this week in the wings of the 58th UN General Assembly: the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting, the Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Belize, the Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Guyana, the Commonwealth Committee on Terrorism (CCT) and the meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG).

Commonwealth Foreign Ministers will meet at the UN on Thursday, 25 September 2003. "Commonwealth Foreign Ministers who met during last year's General Assembly found their meeting most valuable and agreed to meet annually," said Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon.

The Foreign Ministers' Meeting will be followed on Thursday by meetings of the Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Belize and the Commonwealth Ministerial Group on Guyana, at which Ministers will receive reports from the Foreign Ministers of Belize and Guyana respectively.

The Commonwealth Committee on Terrorism (CCT) will meet on Friday, 26 September 2003, to finalise its report to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Abuja, Nigeria in December 2003. The CCT's mandate is to review the progress of implementation of the Commonwealth Plan of Action on Terrorism.

The 22nd meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) will take place on Saturday, 27 September. At this meeting CMAG will review the situation in the countries on its agenda and consider its Report to CHOGM 2003.

Following these meetings Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will visit Washington DC on Monday, 29 September for discussions on issues of Commonwealth interest.
