Commonwealth Secretary-General to attend UN meeting on Terrorism
29 July 2003
Secretary-General Don McKinnon will attend the Fifth United Nations-Regional Organisations High-Level Meeting in New York on 29-30 July. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss practical measures through which the UN and regional organisations can cooperate more closely on matters of peace building and conflict prevention.
This year's meeting will focus specifically on the theme: "New Challenges to International Peace and Security, including International Terrorism".
Commenting on the meeting, Mr McKinnon said: "The UN meeting illustrates the importance of multilateral efforts for peace building and combating terrorism. Multilateral cooperation is essential for the world to address these issues effectively."
In the wake of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States of America, Commonwealth Heads of Government issued a Statement on Terrorism that reiterated their condemnation of all acts of terrorism and renewed their commitment to work together as a diverse community of nations to take concerted action.
The Commonwealth adopted a Counter Terrorism Plan of Action to help with the implementation of the provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 1373. It has involved a considerable programme of technical assistance to build the counter terrorism capacity of Commonwealth states.
