Commonwealth Secretary-General to meet Head of WTO

17 June 2003

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will meet the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, in Geneva on 19 June 2003. They will discuss the progress of trade negotiations ahead of the WTO Ministerial Meeting scheduled to take place in Cancún, Mexico, in September 2003 and the need for a successful trade round which addresses the concerns of developing countries. Mr McKinnon will also meet Geneva-based Commonwealth trade ambassadors.

While in Geneva, the Secretary-General will hold discussions with Dr Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation, and Mr Bertrand Ramcharan, Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
