Commonwealth Secretariat press release

Commonwealth committed to progress in Swaziland

11 March 2003

The Commonwealth Secretariat has expressed surprise at recent media reports stating that Swaziland faces possible expulsion from the Commonwealth.

The Secretariat's spokesperson, Joel Kibazo said there has been no suggestion of such action. "The Commonwealth has been closely engaged with Swaziland and the Secretary-General Don McKinnon visited the country last week. He met with the King of Swaziland, His Majesty King Mswati III and the Prime Minister, Hon Sibusiso Dlamini, and was briefed on recent developments. Mr McKinnon was pleased with the progress being made by the Constitutional Drafting Committee and reaffirmed the Commonwealth's continued commitment to Swaziland's political, social and economic development."
