Commonwealth Chairpersons' Committee on Zimbabwe to meet in Abuja, Nigeria

The Commonwealth Chairpersons' Committee on Zimbabwe, consisting of the Prime Minister of Australia, Rt Hon John Howard (Chairman), the President of Nigeria, H E Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and the President of South Africa, H E Mr Thabo Mbeki, is to meet at Abuja, Nigeria on Monday 23 September 2002. They will be joined by Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon.
Welcoming the meeting, Mr McKinnon said: "The decision of the Troika to meet again this month is important and timely. I welcome the prospect of President Mugabe meeting with the Troika in Abuja and I hope the meeting will help the people of Zimbabwe to move forward."
Note to Editors:The Commonwealth Chairpersons' Committee on Zimbabwe received their mandate from Commonwealth Heads of Government at their meeting in Coolum, Australia in March 2002. It was: "to determine appropriate Commonwealth action on Zimbabwe, in the event of an adverse report from the Commonwealth Observer Group to the Zimbabwe Presidential Election, in accordance with the Harare Commonwealth Declaration and the Millbrook Commonwealth Action Programme." At its previous meeting on 19 March 2002, the Committee decided to suspend Zimbabwe from the Councils of the Commonwealth for one year.
