Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Southern Africa

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon, who has been attending the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, today embarks on official visits to Mauritius, Lesotho and Namibia.

In Mauritius, Mr McKinnon will call on President Offmann, having met with Prime Minister Jugnauth in Johannesburg on Sunday. He will also meet with government ministers and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Navin Ramgoolam.

In Lesotho, the Secretary-General will call on Prime Minister Mosisili and will have an audience with His Majesty King Letsie III. He will address the Parliament and hold discussions with government ministers and political party leaders.

Mr McKinnon will then visit Namibia to address the 48th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference, an annual meeting for parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth. In Windhoek, he will meet with President Nujoma, Prime Minister Theo-Ben Gurirab and members of the government.

Mr McKinnon's meetings will focus on issues of importance to the Commonwealth, including the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), drought and food shortages in Southern Africa and programmes involving Commonwealth assistance and co-operation.
