Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Bangladesh

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will visit Bangladesh from 25 to 27 August 2002, at the invitation of the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Mr Morshed Khan.
Mr McKinnon will hold discussions with the Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, as part of his ongoing consultations with Commonwealth leaders. Issues facing Bangladesh and developments in the region will feature in the discussions. The Secretary-General will also meet the Leader of the Opposition, the Foreign Minister and call on the Acting President.



Note to Editors:
This is Mr McKinnon’s second visit to Bangladesh after taking over as Commonwealth Secretary-General. He last visited Bangladesh in April 2000. Bangladesh is a member of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG). It has been a member of CMAG since the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Durban in 1999. Bangladesh is now serving its second term on the Group, as decided at the Coolum CHOGM in March 2002.
