Commonwealth team to be present at Cameroon elections

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon announced today that he is sending a Commonwealth Expert Team to be present at the National and Municipal Elections in Cameroon, which will take place on 23 June 2002.


The Team has been constituted in response to an invitation from the President of Cameroon and it will comprise Mr Khotso Khasu, Provincial Electoral Officer, North West Province, Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (Team Leader), and Cllr. Ruth Coleman, Leader, North Wiltshire District Council, United Kingdom. They will be accompanied by two Secretariat staff members: Mrs Judith Pestaina, Special Adviser, Political Affairs Division, and Mr Martin Kasirye, Senior Programme Officer in the same division.

The Terms of Reference for the Expert Team are as follows:
"The Team is established by the Commonwealth Secretary-General at the request of the President of Cameroon. It is to consider the arrangements for the National Assembly and Municipal Elections, the overall electoral environment in which the elections are taking place and the poll, the count and the results process. The Team will submit a report to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, who will inform the Ministry of Territorial Administration and the National Electoral Observatory of its findings".
