Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon embarks this weekend on an official visit to Geneva, where he will address the Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Trade Union Council on Sunday 16 June. The theme of his address will be globalisation and human rights in the Commonwealth.
Mr McKinnon will meet with Mr Mike Moore, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), on 17 June. They will address how the Commonwealth and the WTO can help Commonwealth developing countries to participate effectively in the Doha Trade Negotiations.
During his visit the Secretary-General will also meet with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, who delivered this year's Commonwealth Lecture. They will discuss the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms at national and regional levels. The two organisations have recently worked together on the role of national institutions in the protection of human rights.
While in Geneva, Mr McKinnon will also hold discussions with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers on closer co-operation with the Commonwealth.
