Commonwealth stars to launch flags in London

30 May 2002

Cricketing legend Sir Garfield Sobers from Barbados and British sprinter Darren Campbell will be the star attractions at a flag-raising ceremony at Marlborough House tomorrow. Sir Garfield, the former captain of the West Indies team, was the first man to score six sixes in an over of international cricket. Darren Campbell, the current European 100 metre champion and the 200 metre silver medallist at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, will be running for England at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games in July.
This will be the first time the flags of all Commonwealth countries will be flown along the Mall, in the gardens of Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Wearing their traditional dress, children from across the Commonwealth will be raising their countries' flags, in the presence of their High Commissioners.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon said today:
This is a proud day for us, when the flags of our 54 member states go up in a standing display at the Commonwealth's headquarters. This is an important step towards enhancing the Commonwealth character of Marlborough House, without detracting from its heritage as a British Royal Palace.
