Former Nigerian Head of State to head Commonwealth Observer Group in Zimbabwe

General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Head of State of Nigeria, is to head the
Commonwealth Observer Group for the Presidential Election in Zimbabwe, which
takes place from 9 - 10 March 2002.

Announcing the appointment today, Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon
confirmed that the first of an Advance Group of Commonwealth Observers will
arrive in Zimbabwe this week, and the main group of around 40 Observers will
be on the ground later this month.

General Abubakar headed the Commonwealth Observer Group at Zimbabwe's
Parliamentary Elections in June 2000. Mr McKinnon said, "I am very pleased
that General Abubakar has agreed to head up the collective effort. The Group
will observe the election campaign as well as the poll and the counting of the
votes."

Commonwealth Secretariat officials arrived in Zimbabwe today to prepare for
the arrival of the Observers.
