Commonwealth Secretary-General visits North America and the Caribbean

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon today embarks on official visits to Canada, Jamaica, Dominica and Belize. He will also have consultations in the United States.
In Canada, Mr McKinnon will be meeting with Prime Minister Chrétien as part of his consultations in the run-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held in Coolum, Australia, 2-5 March 2002.
The Secretary-General will then travel to the United States. In Washington D.C. he will meet with Jim Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank and IMF Managing Director, Horst Kohler. He will also call on senior members of the United States Government. In New York, he will have discussions with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
His visit to the Caribbean will also focus on CHOGM preparations and the regional economic downturn caused by the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. He will hold meetings, among others, with Prime Ministers P J Patterson in Jamaica, Pierre Charles in Dominica and Said Musa in Belize.
