Commonwealth to send Observers to the Solomon Islands

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon announced today that he has appointed a Commonwealth Observer Group for Solomon Islands, where a General Election is to take place on 5 December 2001.
The four members of the Observer Group are:
Chair Mr Bowen Wells Former Chairman of the International Development
Select Committee and Member of Parliament, United Kingdom
Former Treasurer of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
Ambassador Lucy Bogari
Civil Servant and former Ambassador, Papua New Guinea
Mr Peter Fonso
Member of Parliament, Cameroon
Mr Hendrick Gappy
Electoral Commissioner, Seychelles
Mr McKinnon said that Commonwealth Observers had been invited by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and that there had also been consultation with the political parties and the electoral commission.
Three members of staff from the Commonwealth Secretariat will support the four Observers.
Note to Editors
This is the 36th Commonwealth Observer Group since October 1990, and the first time that the Commonwealth Secretary-General has been invited to send observers to Solomon Islands.
