Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Malaysia
16 August 1996
The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, will visit Malaysia from 17 to 26 August to deliver two keynote speeches in Kuala Lumpur to Commonwealth legislators and broadcasters. While in Malaysia, Chief Anyaoku is expected to meet with the Prime Minister, the Hon Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and senior members of his government for discussions on Commonwealth and other issues.
The Secretary-General will address the opening plenary session of the annual meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) on 19 August. Some 500 representatives from the central, provincial and state governments of the Commonwealth's 53 member countries are expected to attend.
Chief Anyaoku will speak about recent developments in the Commonwealth, focusing in particular on the milestone Millbrook Commonwealth Action Programme which was agreed to by Commonwealth leaders at their summit in New Zealand last November. The Millbrook accord gave substance to Commonwealth Declarations, shifting the emphasis away from words to action. Malaysia is one of eight member countries which comprise the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, set up by Millbrook to deal with serious and persistent violations of basic Commonwealth principles.
The CPA conference will be followed by the biennial meeting of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), the umbrella body for public service television and radio broadcasters in Commonwealth countries. Chief Anyaoku will speak at the first working session on 26 August on the issue of media freedom. He will return to London that evening.
While in Kuala Lumpur, the Secretary-General will also take the opportunity to accept the invitation of the Malaysian organisers to visit the site of the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
