Commonwealth Ministerial Group to Meet on Nigeria and The Gambia

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) will meet at Marlborough House, London, tomorrow (Wednesday 28 August 1996) to consider its recent exchanges with the Nigerian Government regarding CMAG's proposed visit to Nigeria. It will also discuss recent political developments in The Gambia.

CMAG was established by Commonwealth leaders in 1995 to deal with cases of serious or persistent violations of the 1991 Harare Commonwealth Declaration, which sets forth the Commonwealth's commitment to such values as democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The group met in December 1995 and April 1996, and in June 1996 met again for talks with representatives of the Nigerian Government.
There will be a photo opportunity at 9.15 a.m. tomorrow before the start of the meeting. A press conference is scheduled at the end of the meeting at a time to be advised.
