Commonwealth team to observe by-elections in Bangladesh

A team of three officials from the Commonwealth Secretariat has arrived in Bangladesh to observe the final stage of the country's general election process , the holding of by-elections in 15 constituencies on 5 September.

The team is led Mr Richard Nzerem, Assistant Director, Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division. Other members are: Mrs Missouri Sherman-Peter, Assistant Director, Political Affairs Division, and Mr Totis Kotsonis, Senior Programme Officer, Political Affairs Division.

They said in a statement marking their arrival: "We have come to Bangladesh in response to a request from the Government of Bangladesh to the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, for the Commonwealth to observe the by-elections on Thursday 5 September.

"This is a follow-up to the observation of the parliamentary election on 12 June and the re-polling in 27 constituencies on 19 June by a Commonwealth Observer Group. The team's mission is to observe the conduct of the by-elections in accordance with the laws of Bangladesh and to report on it to the Secretary-General.

"We hope that our presence will assist in supporting the electoral and constitutional processes in Bangladesh."
