Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Brunei Darussalam

25 February 1999

Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku will be in Brunei Darussalam from 27 February to 3 March 1999. He will combine a bilateral visit with the inauguration of the Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning, being held to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). The Secretary-General will be holding consultations with the Head of State, HM Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, and with senior ministers on matters related to the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in South Africa.

The Pan-Commonwealth Forum on Open Learning is co-hosted by COL, the Brunei Ministry of Education and the University of Brunei Darussalam and will take place in Bandar Seri Begawan, from 1 to 5 March 1999. The Forum's theme is Empowerment Through Knowledge and Technology. The inaugural address will be given by Chief Anyaoku on the subject of The Commonwealth in the New Information Age. Other speakers will include Mia Amor Mottley (Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture, Barbados), Clare Short (Secretary of State for International Development, UK), Maurice Strong (Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General and Chairman, Earth Council), and Noah Samara (Chairman/CEO, World Space Corporation).

Note to Editors:
COL, based in Canada, was founded following a decision by Commonwealth Heads of Government. The organisation was inspired by the vision that the peoples of the Commonwealth must and can have access to knowledge, regardless of where they live or whether they are rich or poor. COL seeks to encourage the development and sharing of open learning/distance education materials, expertise, technologies and other resources. Working with and providing services to hundreds of institutions throughout the 54-member Commonwealth, COL helps to increase the capacities of developing nations to meet the demands for improving access to quality education and training.
