Commonwealth Successfully Brokers End to Zanzibar Political Impasse

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, announced today that the Commonwealth had successfully brokered an agreement between the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the Civic United Front (CUF) providing for an end to the political impasse which has bedevilled Zanzibar politics since the elections of October 1995.
In warmly welcoming the agreement, Chief Anyaoku said:
It is with a special sense of joy that I welcome the initialling of the Commonwealth-brokered agreement by the representatives of CCM and CUF to end the political impasse in Zanzibar. The agreement is a victory for the people of Zanzibar which should help to bring about true national reconciliation. In welcoming the agreement, I would also like to pay special tribute to the leaders of the two political parties whose commitment and determination have made the agreement possible. I salute them for putting the higher interests of Zanzibar above partisan considerations.
There now remains the no less important challenge of implementing the agreement. It is my fervent hope that the representatives of the two parties will ensure that the agreement is implemented in full and in good faith. The Commonwealth will, for its part, do all in its power to assist the parties to translate the promise of the agreement into practical reality.
In the meantime, I look forward to going to Tanzania to witness the formal signing of the agreement later this month.
