Commonwealth Hosts Workshop for Domestic Election Observers

Representatives of domestic election observer bodies from eleven Commonwealth countries are to meet in Kingston, Jamaica, from 10-12 May in the second in a series of Commonwealth Secretariat workshops on the theme Deepening Democracy. The Workshop of Commonwealth Domestic Election Observers has been organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in co-operation with the Electoral Office of Jamaica and the Jamaican domestic observer body, Citizens' Action for Free and Fair Elections. Its purpose is to promote discussion on key issues concerning the work of domestic election observers, the identification and promotion of best practice and enhanced practical co-operation.
The workshop opens on Monday 10 May with a public session to be addressed by representatives of the Government of Jamaica, Jamaica's Electoral Advisory Committee and Electoral Office, Citizens' Action for Free and Fair Elections and the Commonwealth Secretariat. The workshop will then continue in closed session until the evening of Wednesday 12 May.
The participants are from Bangladesh, Ghana, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan*, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Zambia. The first workshop in the Deepening Democracy series, held in London in 1998, focused on the Role of the Opposition, Future workshops will concern Gender and Democracy, Broadcasting and Democracy, Money and Democratic Politics, and Accountability, Scrutiny and Oversight.
