New Director of Information and Public Affairs Appointed

Kaye Whiteman, a British journalist, has been appointed Director of Information and Public Affairs at the Commonwealth Secretariat from Monday 17 May 1999. He succeeds Michael Fathers, a New Zealander, who has left to resume his career as a journalist.
Mr Whiteman comes to the Secretariat with a depth of experience in Commonwealth journalism, notably at the London-based regional magazine West Africa, where he served as Editor, Editor-in-Chief and General Manager respectively during his seventeen-year tenure there. As a representative of this magazine, he has covered numerous summit meetings including those of the Commonwealth, the Organisation of African Unity and La Francophonie.
From 1973 to 1982, Mr Whiteman also served as Principal Administrator in the Information Directorate-General at the Commission of the European Community (EC) in Brussels. His responsibilities there included the preparation and provision of information on the EC's development policies, notably concerning the Lomé Convention, first signed in 1975.
In addition, Mr Whiteman has contributed articles to a wide range of newspapers, magazines, and learned publications. He has also been a regular broadcaster on radio and television.
