Commonwealth Co-hosts Meeting on the Reform of the International Refugee Protection System
2 October 1996
Some 30 representatives from the Commonwealth, the Council of Europe, non-governmental organisations and the academic community will attend a consultative meeting at Marlborough House, London, on Friday, 4 October to examine ways of reforming the international system of refugee protection. It immediately follows the first meeting of the Commonwealth Intergovernmental Group on Refugees and Displaced Persons at the same venue from 2-3 October.
The consultative meeting will specifically look at ways in which the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and organisations such as the Commonwealth, NGOs and regional groupings can co-operate more effectively to strengthen and improve the international protection of refugees. It will be co-hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Centre for Refugee Studies at Canada's York University, and chaired by Richard Ryscavage, S.J., from Oxford's Refugee Studies Programme. Other participants will include representatives from human rights and refugee advocacy groups such as the European Council on Refugees and Exiles, Minority Rights Group, African Rights, the Aire Centre and the Danish Centre for Human Rights.
