Commonwealth Secretary-General Expresses Sorrow Over Bougainville Premier's Murder
22 October 1996
Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku has expressed his sadness over the recent murder of Premier Theodore Miriung of the Bougainville Transitional Government in Papua New Guinea.
"We in the Commonwealth are mindful of Premier Miriung's commitment to, and earnest efforts for, a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Bougainville, Chief Anyaoku said in a letter to Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan. His untimely death would be a great loss to all Bougainvillians who supported his desire for peace."
Mr Miriung became Premier of Bougainville in April 1995 and since then had been working towards a peaceful settlement of the Bougainville problem.
