Commonwealth Secretary-General to attend CARICOM Summit

Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku will attend the twentieth meeting of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) which takes place in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, from 4 -7 July 1999.
The Secretary-General will attend the Opening Ceremony, which takes place on Sunday, 4 July, and make a presentation to CARICOM Heads of Government on Monday July 5 on matters of mutual concern to Commonwealth Caribbean countries and the Commonwealth in the political, economic and development fields. The Commonwealth Secretariat and the CARICOM Secretariat signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 15 February 1996 in which the two organisations agreed to regular consultations on matters of mutual interest.
Commonwealth technical assistance to the Caribbean has increased in recent years and accounts for 26 per cent of the total Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation resources or £3.5 million (US$5.7 million) per annum.
Twelve of the 14 member states of CARICOM are members of the Commonwealth.
