Commonwealth Mission to Visit Pakistan*
26 October 1999
A Commonwealth ministerial mission is to visit Pakistan* this week (from 27-29 October) as a follow-up to decisions taken last week in London by the eight-member Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG).
The CMAG mission, which will consist of Ministers from Canada, Barbados, Ghana and Malaysia, is expected to meet with General Musharraf and others of the regime, with political leaders and other public figures. The Mission will assess the current situation in Pakistan* and explore with the regime its plans for the early return of Pakistan* to democracy. The Mission will report back to CMAG at its meeting in Durban in mid-November on the eve of the forthcoming Commonwealth Summit.
The mission will be led by The Hon Lloyd Axworthy, MP, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada. The Hon Ms Billie A Miller, MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados, The Hon Victor Gbeho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana and The Hon Tan Sri Dato' Musa bin Hitam, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Malaysia to CMAG, are the other members of the mission. It will be supported by a Commonwealth Secretariat team led by Mr Stuart Mole, Director and Head of the Secretary-General's Private Office.
Note to Editors:
CMAG was established by the Commonwealth Heads of Government in 1995 to address serious or persistent violations of Commonwealth principles as outlined in the Harare Declaration. It was reconstituted by Heads of Government at Edinburgh in October 1997 and now comprises Ministers from Barbados, Botswana, Canada, Ghana, Malaysia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. It is convened by the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
