Commonwealth Envoy in Swaziland
12 February 1996
The Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr K Srinivasan, today called on His Majesty Mswati III, King of Swaziland, and conveyed to him a message from Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
Mr Srinivasan is visiting Swaziland as the Secretary-General's envoy to discuss with the King and the Government of Swaziland ways in which the Commonwealth could provide assistance to that country in its constitutional development. The Secretary-General himself visited Swaziland in March 1995 for high-level discussions in this context.
In a statement in London, Chief Anyaoku said, "Swaziland is a unique country, with a strong traditional base, where significant political developments have taken place recently. Along with other members, Swaziland is committed to the promotion of the Commonwealth's fundamental political values. The challenge for the Government, and for the Commonwealth, is to develop democratic processes and institutions in a way which respects Swaziland's traditions and national circumstances. I am glad that my envoy is discussing with His Majesty ways in which the Commonwealth can best help his Government to respond to this challenge."
