Commonwealth Concern at Recent Developments in Solomon Islands

26 April 2001

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon today expressed concern at reports of recent moves by the Solomon Islands Government to extend the life of Parliament from four to five years.

Mr McKinnon reiterated the call by the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group on the Harare Declaration (CMAG) at its meeting in London on 19-20 March 2001, for "the Government and all concerned parties in Solomon Islands to maintain their commitment to the Townsville and Marau Peace Agreements, and to adhere to the timetable for the proposed parliamentary elections this year".

The Secretary-General noted that developments in Solomon Islands were being closely monitored by the Commonwealth and the wider international community, and a postponement of the elections could affect the country's international credibility and the ongoing peace process. He urged the Government to maintain commitment to the Harare principles and gave the assurance that the Commonwealth was ready to assist with preparations for national elections if necessary.

Note to Editors:

The Solomon Islands Parliament is due to be dissolved on 28 August 2001. According to the Solomon Islands Constitution, national elections must be held within four months of that date.
