Commonwealth Secretary-General to visit Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Mr Don McKinnon, will visit Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam from 8-12 July 2001, as part of his consultations in the run up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Brisbane, Australia, in October. He will have wide-ranging talks with leaders of these countries on a number of Commonwealth issues, including preparations for this meeting.

Mr McKinnon will be in Singapore on 8-10 July, Malaysia on 10-11 July, and Brunei Darussalam on 11-12 July.

While in Singapore, he will have discussions with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. He will also attend the fourth Meeting of Senior Officials of the ten-member High Level Review Group (HLG), which has been looking at the future role of the Commonwealth. At this meeting, the HLG officials are expected to finalise their draft recommendations for submission to the ten HLG leaders at their meeting in Brisbane on 6 October.

The Secretary-General will then travel to Malaysia, where he will meet with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. In Brunei Darussalam, he will hold consultations with the Head of State, HM Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

Continuing his practice of meeting with young people throughout the Commonwealth, Mr McKinnon is expected to address high school students in Kuala Lumpur and Bandar Seri Begawan.

At the 1999 summit in Durban, South Africa, Heads of Government called for the establishment of a High Level Review Group (HLG) under the Chairmanship of the President of South Africa, to review the future role of the Commonwealth, including, among other issues: the changed global environment and the new challenges for the Commonwealth; the overall focus and direction of the Commonwealth; and Secretariat governance.
