Commonwealth Secretary-General Responds to Developments in Pakistan
15 August 2001
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon responded today to President Musharraf's announcement of a 'roadmap' for democracy:
"I have seen the summary of President Musharraf's announcement on 14 August on the 'roadmap' for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan and regard this development as a step in the right direction.
"I am looking forward to discussing various elements in the timetable, when I meet President Musharraf during my visit to Pakistan on 23 August, in order to gain a fuller picture of the measures which are contemplated.
"CMAG Ministers will consider these latest developments in Pakistan when they next meet in early September."
