Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting St Lucia, 24 - 26 September 2001
22 August 2001
Attention: Financial Editors
'Financing for Development' will be the theme when Commonwealth finance ministers gather for their annual meeting in St Lucia from 24-26 September 2001. The Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting draws together ministers from countries at all stages of economic development, and takes place a few days before the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank.
Ministers will focus on three pressing issues:
· the implications of the worsening global economic outlook
· innovative approaches to mobilising finance for development
· enhancing debt relief for heavily indebted poor countries (HIPCs)
Other issues under discussion:
· A new Financing for Development framework fit for the globalised world of today
· Review of IMF/World Bank conditions on loans
· How to avert the risk of global capital markets bypassing most developing countries
· Why debt reduction is going more slowly than anticipated
· The World Bank/Commonwealth Secretariat Joint Task Force on Small States (review of implementation)
· How budget policy can impact unevenly on male and female citizens
Besides helping to shape the developing world agenda before the IMF/World Bank meetings, ministers will also highlight the key issues in advance of the UN Conference on Financing for Development in March 2002. This year, the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting is preceded by a special meeting for ministers from Commonwealth HIPC countries on 24 September.
