Secretary-General to visit Cyprus

26 October 2007

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will visit the Republic of Cyprus from 28 to 29 October 2007.

During his visit, the Secretary-General will call on President Tassos Papadopoulos and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Erato Kozakou-Marcoulli.

He will brief them on preparations for the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kampala, Uganda, from 23-25 November, including the substantive issues likely to feature on the agendas of the CHOGM and the preceding meeting of Commonwealth Foreign Ministers from 21 to 22 November.

The Secretary-General is also expected to be briefed on latest developments on the Cyprus issue.

Note to Editors

Cyprus joined the Commonwealth in 1961, a year after attaining independence. It hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1993.

Commonwealth Heads of Government have traditionally addressed the Cyprus issue at their biennial meetings. At their last summit in Malta in 2005 they, inter alia, “expressed their support for the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity of the Republic of Cyprus” and “agreed on the importance of supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to bring about a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”
