International partners and experts on migration and development will meet at the Commonwealth Secretariat headquarters in London on 17 May 2007 to discuss ways of maximising the benefits of migration and mitigating its negative impacts.
The Pre-Global Forum on Migration and Development will bring together officials from the International Organisation for Migration, International Labour Organisation, Commonwealth Secretariat, African Caribbean and Pacific Secretariat, the World Bank, UNCTAD, WTO, Regional Organisations including, the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat (PIFS), academic institutions, government representatives, members of the Global Migration Group, and civil society representatives.
Keynote messages will be delivered by the Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General, Mr Ransford Smith, and the Deputy Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) – Mme Ndiaye Ndioro, whose organisation is currently chairing the Global Migration Group (GMG).
Jointly organised by the Economic Affairs and Social Transformation Divisions of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the forum will act as curtain raiser for the Global Migration Group Meeting scheduled to take place in Belgium in July 2007.
Speaking ahead of the London meeting, the director of Economic Affairs Dr Indrajit Coomaraswamy said that he hoped that participants would point to ways for “establishing a win-win situation from the migration process between countries generating migrants and those on the receiving end.”
On her part, Ann Keeling, the director of the Social Transformation Division at the Secretariat said the pre-global forum is meant to “set the context in the area of existing policies as well as good practices that could be discussed by member states at the Belgium Meeting.”
There will be sessions on migration and its impact on development; brain drain, remittances and development. Country case studies in migration and development, as well as challenges in global migration and development, will also be presented.
The outcome of the one day meeting will be presented by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Honourable Don McKinnon.
