Building economic resilience in small states

20 April 2007

Leading Commonwealth economists meet in Malta

Economists and policy-makers from Commonwealth countries will meet in Valletta, Malta, from 23 to 25 April 2007 to address the challenges of building economic resilience in small states.

The International Conference on Small States and Economic Resilience is jointly organised by the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) of the Commonwealth Secretariat, together with the Islands and Small States Institute (ISSI) and the Department of Economics of the University of Malta.

Dr Indrajit Coomaraswamy, Director of EAD said: “Small states face particular threats from economic shocks and natural disasters and their capacity to deal with these shocks is limited.

“The conference will develop orientations in economic resilience building that would enable small states to withstand the negative effects of these external shocks and their special development challenges.”

Dr Coomaraswamy, who will present a paper on Government Intervention and Optimal Regulation,’ said the role of government is changing due to the number of international agreements and regional initiatives that countries have signed up to, as well as the development paradigm that countries have embarked upon.

Professor Lino Briguglio, Director of the ISSI, said the conference aimed to bring together policy-makers and practitioners from small island states, from international and regional organisations and from academic institutions, to discuss and propose suitable policies for economic resilience building and to explore ways in which the Resilience Index could be operationalised.
