Commonwealth Secretary-General strongly condemns assassination of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister

15 August 2005

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon issued the following statement on Saturday 13 August:

"I am deeply shocked and saddened by the assassination of Lakshman Kadirgamar, Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka.

"He was a distinguished and effective representative of his country on the international stage. He was committed to the Commonwealth and was an active member of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG). His death has robbed Sri Lankaof an illustrious son. I extend my deepest sympathies to the Government of Sri Lanka and to the bereaved family.

"I strongly condemn this cruel and senseless act of terrorism. The Commonwealth has always believed that terrorism serves no purpose. Those who perpetrate violence in this way will never win a real peace.

"We in the Commonwealth remain committed to supporting the peace process in Sri Lanka".
