The world has lost a true friend, says Commonwealth Secretary-General

2 April 2005

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon issued the following statement upon the death of Pope John Paul II:

"It is with great sadness that I have heard the news of the death of Pope John Paul II.

The world has lost a true friend. One of the most respected religious leaders of our time, he was a towering figure in our troubled world.

Throughout his life, he was an example of moral courage and determination and a source of inspiration to millions.

His vision and generosity of spirit will be missed in the Commonwealth and across the globe."
