Outgoing Commonwealth Secretary-General Honoured by The Queen

An announcement from Buckingham Palace this morning said that Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to appoint Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the outgoing Commonwealth Secretary-General, as an Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).

Chief Anyaoku has expressed his delight at the appointment and said: "I am delighted to receive such a high honour from the Head of the Commonwealth, who has continued to render invaluable service to our association of 54 member countries."

Chief Emeka Anyaoku has been Secretary-General of the Commonwealth since 1990. The statement from the Palace described the Royal Victorian Order as having been founded in 1896 by Queen Victoria. "It is a special mark of honour conferred by The Sovereign on individuals of exceptional distinction," said the Palace announcement. "Appointments are in The Sovereign's personal gift."
