Commonwealth Secretary-General Welcomes Nobel Peace Prize Award to David Trimble and John Hume

19 October 1998

Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku has congratulated David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, and John Hume, leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party, on jointly winning the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize.

In messages sent to both politicians from New Zealand, where he is attending Commonwealth business, Chief Anyaoku said, "This is indeed worthy recognition of the outstanding role that you have played over many years in bringing peace and reconciliation to the two communities in Northern Ireland - and to the island of Ireland itself - through the Peace Accord.  I know that you will not rest until the Good Friday Accord lives as a reality in the hearts and minds of all in Northern Ireland and I hope you will be further encouraged by this international recognition to continue your noble   work."
