Commonwealth Secretary-General to Visit Wales on 7 May

1 May 1996

Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku will visit Cardiff on Tuesday, 7 May to address the Welsh Centre for International Affairs on aspects of the Commonwealth's role in a divided world. He will present a Commonwealth vision for the 21st century.

During his one-day visit to Cardiff as a guest of the Lord Mayor, Chief Anyaoku will meet the Welsh media at a press conference to be held at the Council Chamber, Temple of Peace, at 1430 hours.

He will later attend a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor before he is scheduled to speak to the Centre for International Affairs, City Hall, at 1930 hours.

Chief Anyaoku, a Nigerian, was chosen as Commonwealth Secretary-General in 1989 by Commonwealth Heads of Government at a summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and took up office in July 1990. He was reappointed for a second five-year term in July last year. He has had a long and distinguished diplomatic career inside the Commonwealth Secretariat and outside, serving his country as Foreign Minister in 1983 when Nigeria was ruled by a democratically elected government.

During his term as Secretary-General, Chief Anyaoku has helped direct the Commonwealth towards a new mandate that is based on democracy, good governance, human rights, the rule of law and sustainable development. Since 1990 the Commonwealth has sent teams to observe 18 parliamentary and presidential elections in 15 Commonwealth countries and overseen the transition of nine countries that were one-party governments or military regimes into working multi-party democracies.
