Commonwealth Secretary-General to attend 9th COMESA Summit

The Nineth Summit of COMESA
Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon with Kenneth Kaunda, the first President of Zambia.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Don McKinnon will attend the 9th Summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) to be held in Kampala, Uganda on 7-8 June 2004. On the agenda are issues which are important to the work of the Commonwealth, including economic development strategies.

While in Kampala, Mr McKinnon will meet Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, host and incoming chair of COMESA. He will also hold consultations with leaders of Commonwealth member countries attending the summit.

Mr McKinnon's discussions with leaders are likely to cover mandates from the last Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and preparations for the next CHOGM to be held in Malta in 2005.

COMESA is a regional trading bloc comprising 20 African countries that aim to integrate their economies and strengthen their trade and investment links.
